NASCAR » Cup: Pocono - Qualifying times

Juan Pablo Montoya pulled off a surprise pole position for the Pennsylvania 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the unique triangular Pocono Raceway.
Juan Montoya put Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing on pole position for Sunday's Pennsylvania 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup with a lap of 51.124s (176.043mph) on the 2.5-mile unique three-turn Pocono Raceway.

It's Montoya's eighth pole in 202 Cup series starts, and his first since April 2011 when he claimed the top spot at Richmond. He is the 15th different pole position driver so far in 2012, and it automatically puts him into the 2013 Daytona Shootout.

He qualified 0.072s ahead of Denny Hamlin in second place, while Paul Menard recovered from his Friday first practice accident - which had seen his car crash and catch fire at the end of the session, forcing him to the backup for the weekend - will line up on the second row alongside Kasey Kahne.

Stephen Leicht was the only driver attempting to qualify on speed not to make it onto the 43-car starting grid.

Practice 1 on Friday was topped by Jimmie Johnson with a lap of 51.638s (174.290 mph) just 0.088s ahead of Kyle Busch who was in turn just eight thousandths ahead of Carl Edwards. In practice 2, Dale Earnhardt Jr. set the fastest time of the Friday track activity with a lap of 50.721s (177.441 mph), 0.134s ahead of Matt Kenseth and two tenths faster than Greg Biffle. Busch was in fourth once again just ahead of Edwards, while Johnson dropped back to tenth.

The scheduled and somewhat controversial Cup debut of John Wes Townley failed to materialise, after the team opted to replace the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series regular driver with Jason White after Townley hit the wall at the exit of turn 2 during his warmup lap before the first official Friday practice session.
