Nationwide: Watkins Glen - Race results

Carl Edwards returned to the Nationwide Series and to winning ways, claiming victory in the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International over the Penske cars of Brad Keselowski and Sam Hornish Jr.
Carl Edwards returned to the Nationwide Series and showed once again why he had practically owned this championship in the past, claiming victory over hard-charging Penske duo Brad Keselowski and Sam Hornish Jr. on the Watkins Glen permanent road course.

Making his first Nationwide appearance in 2012 after deciding to step away from the series at the end of 2011 in order to focus on his Sprint Cup campaign, this was Edwards' 38th win in 245 starts in the series and the first time he had gone to victory lane at Watkins Glen.

A poor 22nd place finish for series rookie Austin Dillon following a late-race tyre blow-out dropped him down to fourth place in the standings, and means that despite a comparatively lacklustre 12th place finish, Elliott Sadler now has a 13pt margin over Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and 24pts over Sam Hornish Jr, who was the highest-placed of those drivers eligible for Nationwide championship points.

Sam Hornish Jr. earlier claimed pole position for the Zippo 200 at The Glen with a lap of 72.027s (122.454 mph), his first pole in 54 NASCAR Nationwide Series races. He had been joined on the front row of the starting grid by Carl Edwards, who admitted that he had missed his Nationwide outings more than he had expected.

"I've missed it a little more than I thought I would," said Edwards on Friday. "I miss the group of people that are over there in that garage and one thing I'm really excited about is getting to race with some of these guys that I haven't really raced with much ... Overall, I just miss racing with those guys on Saturdays."

Rain in the morning on Friday at Watkins Glen didn't stop the Nationwide cars getting out on track for their sole practice session of the weekend on the 7-turn, 2.45-mile road course. After some early light drizzle at the start of the session, the track dried up and Brad Keselowski was fastest with a lap of 74.588s (118.250 mph) just eight thousandths of a second faster than Kyle Busch, whose #54 car appeared to blow an engine a few minutes from the end.
