Cup: Bristol - Starting grid

Qualifying for the Saturday evening's IRWIN Tools Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway was thwarted by rain, leaving Casey Mears on pole position based on earlier practice times.
A thunderstorm hit Bristol Motor Speedway shortly after the end of Nationwide Series qualifying, leaving the Sprint Cup drivers drenched and unable to run their qualifying laps for Saturday's IRWIN Tools Night Race.

As per NASCAR's rule book, that means that the starting grid is set according to the earlier two-hour first practice session on Friday, which sees Casey Mears taking pole position and lining up alongside Brad Keselowski. Mears had recorded a laptime of 15.701s (122.209 mph) just six thousandths of a second faster than Keselowski.

Last week's race winner Greg Biffle will start from the second row, alongside Joey Logano who set the fastest time of all on Friday, topping the shorter 45-minute second practice with a lap of 15.676s (122.404 mph) - with Keselowski again in second spot, this time by 0.032.

Kurt Busch will start alongside Ryan Newman on the tenth row, which may prove interesting after the two made contact on track earlier in the day.

The lack of a qualifying session meant that Scott Speed, Kelly Bires, Reed Sorenson and JJ Yeley were all denied the chance to make the grid based on speed and lacked the car owner points and race starts.

Danica Patrick was able to make it into her first Cup event at Bristol on owner points despite clearly not finding the half mile short oval track to her liking this weekend, even spinning during her Nationwide qualifying run.
