Denny Hamlin won the AdvoCare 500 night race under the floodlights at Atlanta Motor Speedway, a race which decided almost all of the 2012 Chase line-up.
Denny Hamlin claimed his fourth win of 2012 with victory in the AdvoCare 500 on Sunday evening, holding off Jeff Gordon in a green-white-chequered finish. It's his first ever victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and his 21st win in 248 NASCAR Sprint Cup starts.

Greg Biffle continues to lead the championship by 8pts over Dale Earnhardt Jr. despite a 15th place finish. The result confirms that Hamlin joins them as a lock for the post-regular season Chase that decides the Sprint Cup championship: also locked into the top ten now are Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and Kevin Harvick, while Jimmie Johnson claimed his berth last week. That leaves only one spot in the top ten still available: while Tony Stewart hasn't yet clinched that, he's likely to and if not will claim one of the two wild card slots instead.

Currently the two wild card slots are in the hands of Kasey Kahne and Kyle Busch. Hamlin did his Joe Gibbs Racing team mate a huge favour on Sunday night, since a win for Jeff Gordon would almost certainly have knocked Busch out of his final chance of making the Chase, if Gordon had been handed the second wild card by beating Hamlin to the line.

There had been two practice sessions held on Saturday, with Greg Biffle pacing the first with a lap of 30.629s (181.005 mph) on the 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway ahead of Matt Kenseth, who went on to top the later session with a time of 30.653s (180.863 mph) just ahead of Jeff Gordon. In both sessions, Michael McDowell took the wheel of the #20 after regular driver Joey Logano reported ill with stomach pains.
