Cup: Richmond - Qualifying times

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start Saturday night's Federated Auto Parts 400 Sprint Cup race from the front, after winning his first pole position since the 2011 Daytona 500.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. claimed pole position for Saturday evening's Federated Auto Parts 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway. It's Earnhardt's 11th pole in 461 Cup starts but his first since the 2011 Daytona 500 60 races previously, and his first at Richmond.

His lap of 21.256s (127.023mph) deposed his Hendrick Motorsports team mate Jeff Gordon off provisional pole by just seven thousandths of a second. But a front row start for Gordon is stilla major boost in the four-time champion's bid to make the Chase in tomorrow's night race, the final event before the cut-off for the post-regular season championship battle.

Jeff Burton had topped the first practice session on Friday (21.529s, 125.412 mph) and Carl Edwards topped the happy hour with a lap of 22.073s (122.321 mph) on the three-quarter mile D-shaped oval, but qualifying proved a struggled for all powered cars; Ford was the highest representative and will start from 16th, while Burton will get underway from 20th.
