NASCAR » Cup: Chicago - Qualifying times

Five-time champion Jimmie Johnson starts his 2012 Chase campaign in rude health, claiming pole position for Sunday afternoon's GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.
Jimmie Johnson clinched pole position for the GEICO 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway tri-oval, the first race of the 2012 Chase for the championship title.

It's Johnson's 27th pole in 390 starts, and his second of this year. His lap of 29.530s (182.865mph) was 0.037s faster than non-Chase contender Aric Almirola who will start alongside Johnson on the front row for Sunday afternoon's race. Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. claimed the second row, while Scott Riggs, Reed Sorenson, JJ Yeley and Jason Leffler all failed to make the 43-car grid.

Martin Truex Jr. had set the fastest time in the first practice on Friday with a lap of 29.709s (181.763 mph) and Kyle Busch was fastest in the later session with a lap of 29.751s (181.507 mph) just 0.048s faster than Almirola.

The Nationwide Series is also racing at Chicago this weekend, with the race taking place later on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile the Truck Series competitors are over at Iowa Speedway for their own Saturday night outing under the floodlights on the 0.875-mile oval.
