Kasey Kahne claimed pole position for the autumn race at Talladega Superspeedway, with Ryan Newman starting alongside him on the front row.
Kasey Kahne claimed pole position for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Talladega Speedway, a lap of 50.017s (191.455mph) just 0.081s up on that of Ryan Newman over the 2.66-mile circuit. It's Kahne's third pole position of 2012 since he moved to Hendrick Motorsports, and his 25th pole in 318 series starts, but the first time that he'll start from pole at Talladega.

Chae contenders Clint Bowyer (3rd), Tony Stewart (4th), Greg Biffle (5th), Jeff Gordon (6th) and Martin Truex Jr. (9th) all start in the top ten, but it was a tough day for two of the leading contenders for the 2012 Chase after Brad Keselowski (22nd) and Denny Hamlin (23rd) were the slowest of the Chase field in qualifying on Saturday afternoon.

With only 43 cars entered, everyone made the grid for Sunday's Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500.

Practice on Friday saw Travis Kvapil topping the times in the first practice with a lap of 47.772s (200.452 mph) after concentrating on running some 200 lap with drafting partner Casey Mears. However it seemed that some drivers were backing off from fast runs, possibly in a strategic move relating to their order in qualifying: Jimmie Johnson put in the 37th fastest time.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. led the Happy Hour later practice session with 48.462s (197.598 mph), 0.019s faster that Kurt Busch in his last outing for Phoenix Racing before moving to his new seat for 2013 with Furniture Row Racing. 11 drivers opted not to run in the session, and many ran limited laps as they sought to save their engines for the gruelling Sunday race.
