Greg Biffle claimed his third pole of the season with a new record qualifying lap of 27.877s (193.708mph) putting him 0.05s ahead of fellow front row man Mark Martin.

It's Biffle's 12th career pole in 361 NASCAR Sprint Cup series starts, but the first time he's succeeded in claiming pole at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It's his first pole in the 2012 Chase, the last coming in May at Darlington 19 races ago.

Other Chase contenders qualifying in the top ten include Biffle's Roush Fenway Racing team mate Matt Kenseth, Joe Gibbs Racing's Denny Hamlin, Hendrick Motorsports duo Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne, and Michael Waltrip Racing team mates Clint Bowyer and Martin Truex Jr..

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is replaced in the Hendrick #88 car by Regan Smith who qualified in 26th place. Kurt Busch will start from 21st in Smith's old Furniture Row Racing #78, while Busch's previous race seat at Phoenix Racing is taken by the returning AJ Allmendinger who managed to qualify for the race in 38th.

Joe Nemechek, Josh Wise, Scott Riggs and Cole Whitt failed to qualify for the 43-car grid and will miss Saturday night's race.
