Cup: Martinsville - Race results

Jimmie Johnson won the Tums Fast Relief 500 Cup race on Sunday to go top in the 2012 Chase, but a determined damage limitation run by Brad Keselowski means Johnson's lead is just 2pts.
Jimmie Johnson won the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday afternoon to put him 2pts into the lead of the Sprint Cup Chase standings over Brad Keselowski, who battled through the field from a poor grid position to finish in sixth place.

This was Johnson's fourth win in 2012 and his 59th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory in 396 races; seven of them have come on the half-mile oval. His victory by 0.479s over Kyle Busch clinches the manufacturers championship on favour of Chevrolet with three races remaining in the season.

It was a torrid day for Denny Hamlin, who struggled through multiple setbacks before finally suffered an electrical short circuit that put him 34 laps down and classified in 33rd place, effectively ending his Chase hopes. Also undone was Kevin Harvick who suffered an engine blow-up on lap 173, while Tony Stewart's hopes of retaining his title also took a blow with a 27th place finish.

Full race report now available.

Johnson had taken pole position in qualifying on Friday afternoon, putting him alongside Brian Vickers for the start of Sunday's race. There were two further Cup practice sessions on Saturday, with Vickers topping both with times of 19.732s (95.966 mph) which was 0.014s faster than Jeff Gordon in the early session and 19.751s (95.874 mph) in the second which put him 0.044s ahead of Gordon's Hendrick Motorsport team mate Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Denny Hamlin won the Saturday NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race. There was no Nationwide Series race this weekend.
