Kyle Busch claimed pole position at Phoenix International Raceway for Sunday's AdvoCare 500, in what will be the penultimate race in the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup championship.
Kyle Busch will start Sunday's penultimate 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup race from pole position, after his time of 25.943s (138.766mph) was enough to put him on pole position by a tenth of a second over Martin Truex Jr.

It's Busch's 10th pole in 292 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts, his most recent pole position before this having been in July at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, his only previous start from the front in 2012. He last won pole at Phoenix International Raceway in 2006.

Stephen Leicht was the fastest qualifying rookie in 35th place, and JJ Yeley was the single car to fail to make the 43-car grid for the AdvoCare 500 based on speed.

Earlier on Friday, Busch had pipped his Joe Gibbs Racing team mate to the top spot on the timesheets by a tenth of a second with a lap of 26.127s (137.788 mph) at the one mile oval. Jeff Burton and Sam Hornish Jr. both had accidents during the session serious enough to send them to their backup cars for the remainder of the weekend; Greg Biffle also slapped the wall late in practice, but the team decided to repair the car rather than opting for the backup.
