Nationwide: Phoenix - Race results

Joey Logano won the penultimate Nationwide Series race of 2012, the Great Clips 200 at Phoenix International Raceway, while Elliott Sadler crashed his hopes of winning the series title.

Joey Logano won the Great Clips 200 Nationwide Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, his 14th series win and his ninth of 2012 - more than anyone else this season - after leading for 168 of the 204 laps of the race. It's the first time that he's won at the one-mile oval.

Logano had claimed pole position for Saturday afternoon race, his time of 27.145s (132.621mph) on the one-mile oval putting him 0.036s ahead of this Cup team mate Kyle Busch. It was Logano's 22nd pole in 109 series starts and his sixth time at the front in 2012, and he felt good doing it: “When I got done with that lap, I didn't think it was good enough,” said Logano after the session. "It's a good sign when the car has a lot of speed in it."

The championship points co-leader coming into the race, Elliott Sadler had put the #2 into the wall during his qualifying run. That means that despite setting the 16th fastest time, Sadler had to start from the back of the grid for the race after switching to his backup car. It proved a handicap for the rest of the day, which finally saw him crash out two laps from the end and all-but hand Ricky Stenhouse Jr. the 2012 series title in the process.

Joey Gase and Carl Long failed to qualify on speed for the 43-car grid, but there was consternation about the qualifying performance of Nur Ali in the #70. The car was already guaranteed a grid spot based on owner points even though Ali's laptime was a troubling five seconds off the next-slowest at Phoenix. In the end, the team decided to stand down Ali and replace him in the car with Timmy Hill, whose place in the #15 was taken in turn by Carl Long.

The two practice sessions were held on Friday afternoon. Kasey Kahne topped the first with a time of 27.098s (132.851mph) putting him 0.044s ahead of Austin Dillon, while Rickey Stenhouse Jr. was fastest in the second session after posting a time of 27.107s (132.807mph) with Dillon again in second place.
