Ricky Stenhouse Jr. successfully claimed a second consecutive NASCAR Nationwide Series title, a sixth place in the season finale race at Homestead-Miami Speedway enough to maintain his lead in the championship points standings over Elliott Sadler and Austin Dillon. Stenhouse is only the sixth driver in the history of the Nationwide Series to score back-to-back titles, the most recent driver to accomplish it being Martin Truex Jr. in 2004 and 2005.

Dillon clinched the Rookie of the Year title - only the third driver to claim that honour in both the Nationwide and Truck series, the previous drivers to do so being Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle. Danica Patrick also secured 10th place in the final Nationwide standings, the best championship showing for a female driver in any of NASCAR's three national series.

The Ford EcoBoost 300 itself was won by Regan Smith in his first Nationwide race since July 7, 2007 as he gears up to a full time return to the series in 2013 with JR Motorsports. It's the first time that the team itself has been in victory lane in over two years, and Smith's first Nationwide victory in 103 series starts in total. His previous best finish was fifth on three separate occasions.

Kyle Busch had earlier claimed pole position for the race with a lap of 32.146s (167.984mph) which was 0.047s ahead of Elliott Sadler with Stenhouse and Dillon lining up immediately behind on the second row of the grid. For Busch, it was his 26th pole in 244 series starts (his third of 2012) putting him into fourth on the all-time series poles rankings - although it was the first time Busch had started on pole at Homestead-Maimi in six attempts.

In the two practice sessions held on Friday, Ryan Blaney set the pace with a time of 32.391s (166.713 mph) a little over a tenth of a second faster than Kenny Wallace; while in the second, leading series rookie Austin Dillon's time of 32.292s (167.224 mph) was best by 0.243s over Mike Bliss.
