Danica Patrick was the surprise fastest driver in practice for the Daytona 500, the curtain-raiser event in the 2013 Sprint Cup calendar.
Danica Patrick was the fastest driver of Saturday afternoon's two practice sessions for the 2013 Daytona 500 event which opens the new season of Sprint Cup racing.

Patrick set her best time in the second session, with a lap of 45.867s (196.220mph) on the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway beating Joey Logano's benchmark of 46.057s (195.410 mph) in the earlier practice.

Qualifying for the Daytona 500 takes place on Sunday afternoon, but unlike all other NASCAR races the qualifying session only fixes the front row of the grid with the two fastest cars starting side-by side in next Sunday's race.

The rest of the field goes into the two midweek Daytona Duels with the starting order for each Duel determined by their positions in qualifying. Those in odd-numbered positions race in Duel 1 to determine the order in which they line up for the Daytona 500 behind the pole car on the inside line, and those in even-numbered race in Duel 2 to determine how they start on the outside line.

Juan Montoya blew an engine in practice on Saturday, and as a result will have to start his Duel race from the back of the field. "It's okay, it's part of racing," said Montoya after the blow-up. "It happens. We will get it fixed and get out there, we'll be fine."
