NASCAR » Daytona 500 - Practice times

Dale Earnhardt Jr. suffers an engine blow-up in practice, handicapping him going into Thursday's Duel race setting the Daytona starting order.
Michael Waltrip was the fastest man in midweek practice for the Daytona 500, the last track session before the two Duel races on Thursday night that will fix the remaining spots on the starting grid for the race behind the front row consisting of Danica Patrick and Jeff Gordon.

Waltrip's time of 45.375s (198.347 mph) was set in the first session, with Kasey Kahne topping the times in the later session with a best lap of 45.515s (197.737 mph).

Dale Earnhardt Jr. suffered an engine failure in the first session, and the change-out of the Chevrolet engine means that the #88 will start his Duel qualifying event from the back, handicapping him in his efforts to get a high grid position for Sunday's race.

Brad Keselowski lost time with a fuel pump failure but will not incur a similar setback for the Duel. There was also a collision between Carl Edwards and Ryan Newman caused when the #99 moved down the track into the path of the #39; Mark Martin was also caught up in the incident and damaged.

“Just all of a sudden, my car was going across his nose," said Edwards, saying that neither he nor Newman fully understood what had happened. "[Ryan] did say that he tried to come up and put the air brakes on me. I think in doing so it just made my car that loose. I hadn't been loose the entire time. It was just something new, and a different characteristic of this car I guess.”
