NASCAR » Phoenix - Cup qualifying

There's no stopping Mark Martin, with the indestructible 54-year-old netting his 56th pole at Phoenix in 856 Sprint Cup races.
Mark Martin will start Sunday's Subway Fresh Fit 500 from pole position after holding off Kasey Kahne by just four hundredths of a second in qualifying at Phoenix International Raceway for the second Sprint Cup event of 2013

It's Martin's third pole in 33 races at the one-mile, low-banked tri-oval - he also claimed pole here in 2012's spring race. Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch will start from second row behind Martin and Kahne, despite repeated problems for Johnson getting through technical inspection before making his qualifying run.

After her eye-catching pole at Daytona, Danica Patrick was only able to qualify in 40th position at Phoenix. The fastest qualifying Cup rookie driver was Roush Fenway Racing's Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in 12th place.

AJ Allmendinger returned to Cup duty for Phoenix Racing at the wheel of the #51 and will start from 23rd. Kurt Busch qualified in 25th but hit the wall on his run in the Furniture Row Racing #78 which means he will take to the backup car for Sunday's race.
