NASCAR » Phoenix - Cup results

Carl Edwards finally returned to winning ways claiming victory in Sunday's Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway ahead of Jimmie Johnson.
Carl Edwards won the Subway Fresh Fit 500 on Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway, holding off Jimmie Johnson to the line in a green-white chequered finish while Denny Hamlin got the better of both Brad Keselowski and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to jump from fifth to claim third place at the final restart.

It's Edwards' first win in 70 races, his 20th victory in 303 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. It's only his second win at Phoenix. It was also the first time in 13 Cup races that the Roush Fenway Racing driver has even led laps - he ended up out in front for 122 of the 316 laps.

The race saw eight cautions and assorted other incidents, many of them stemming from melted beads on tyres suspected of being the result of over-stress caused by the right camber settings on the affected car. The Generation-6 cars, in their first non-restrictor plate Sprint Cup race, proved to be notably resistent to on-track overtaking moves for much of the event.

Johnson continues to lead the Cup standings, now by eight points from his Hendrick Motorsports team mate Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Penske Racing's Brad Keselowski.

Full race report to follow on Monday.
