Fontana - Cup results

Kyle Busch won the Auto Club 400 Cup race in Fontana, but Denny Hamlin suffered a hard wreck after battling Joey Logano, who ended up in a fight with Tony Stewart on pit road.
All kinds of mayhem capped the Auto Club 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California on Sunday afternoon, but it was Kyle Busch who emerged with the actual race win - his first victory in 2013, his second at Fontana and his 25th victory in 298 Cup starts. It breaks a 31-race winless streak stretching back to Richmond in April 2012. Busch also won the Nationwide Series race the previous day. (See separate story.)

The race had looked like it had come to a showdown between Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano, former team mates with Busch at Joe Gibbs Racing before Logano decamped to Penske Racing at the start of 2013 and who have been in an escalating feud over recent weeks. In the end, it appeared suspiciously like Logano opted to settle scores rather than take the win, even telling reporters afterwards: "That's what he gets."

With Hamlin sent into a huge hit with the inside wall out of turn 4, Busch was able to swoop past to secure victory. Described as awake and alert, Hamlin was put into an ambulance and subsequently airlifted to a local hospital for evaluation after being removed form the wrecked #11. Meanwhile Tony Stewart reportedly confronted Logano in pit lane about a blocking incident during a race restart, and insults and punches were thrown: ""He's nothing but a little rich kid who has never had to work in his life," fumed Stewart, adding: "He threw a water bottle at me like a little girl."

Dale Earnhardt Jr. took second place to put himself into the lead of the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship standings over Brad Keselowski by 12 points. Third place in the race went to Joey Logano who was classified ahead of Carl Edwards when the yellow came out for Hamlin's crash; Kyle's older brother Kurt, currently racing for Furniture Row Racing, finished in fifth.
