2013 Richmond NASCAR: Cup qualifying

Matt Kenseth bounced back from a week of turmoil to put the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing Sprint Cup car in pole position for this weekend's race, alongside team mate Brian Vickers.
Matt Kenseth claimed pole position for Saturday night's Toyota Owners 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race on the three-quater mile Richmond International Raceway short track in Virginia, his 10th pole in 481 series races and his first in 27 races at Richmond.

It's his second pole of 2013, although his first last weekend at Kansas was voided as part of the penalties imposed on Kenseth and his team for an underweight component in the #20's Toyota engine.

"The car was better than I could have ever expected," said Kenseth. "This has been one of my worst qualifying tracks on the circuit. I was really chomping at the bit to get to the track this weekend."

Clearly, Kenseth and the whole JGR team had been fired up by the events of the previous few days.

"For sure, it was one of our goals this weekend was to come here and sit on the pole and kind of quiet down at least part of the noise. I was pretty glad we were able to accomplish that," he said. "It feels good to be on the pole. After this week, I thought it was real possible that we don't win another pole this year the way qualifying usually is, but they give me such fast cars every week. It feels like we might get a few."

Kenseth will be joined on the front row by his temporary Joe Gibbs Racing team mate Brian Vickers, who is sitting in for the injured Denny Hamlin in the team's #11 car. Kenseth's pole time of 20.716s (130.334mph) was just five thousandths of a second faster than that of Vickers, and beat the previous circuit record of 129.983mph - actually set by Vickers, back in May 2004.

"These guys did a great job," he said. "The Toyota was fast. Maybe I just should have pushed it a little bit harder getting in the corner. The track picked up a lot of speed. Looks like they are going to break the old track record I set!"

Behind them, it's an all-Hendrick Motorsports second row as Jeff Gordon lines up alongside Kasey Kahne. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start from 9th place, leaving the fourth HMS driver Jimmie Johnson handicapped by a 26th place on Saturday's grid.

With 43 cars entered, all drivers make the start of the evening race under the floodlights at RIR.
