2013 Richmond NASCAR: Nationwide results

Brad Keselowski beat Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch in a final run to the flag in the ToyotaCare 250 Nationwide race on Friday evening at Richmond International Raceway.
Brad Keselowski emerged victorious at the end of an eventful ToyotaCare 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race under the floodlights at the three-quarter mile short track at Richmond International Raceway on Friday evening. The Penske Racing driver had started from pole for the 14th time in the Nationwide Series and went in to collect his 21st victory in 196 races. It's Keselowski's third win in 2013 and his second in 13 starts at Richmond, and is the 12th time that the polesitter has gone on to win the race in a Nationwide event at the venue.

It was a race very much dominated by Sprint Cup regulars: Kyle Busch started the race alongside Keselowski on the front row, and Kevin Harvick led for the most laps of the 250-lap event with 96 out in front - although Nationwide Series regular Sam Hornish Jr. was next up with 83 laps in charge. An early accident on lap 24 for Dexter Stacey caused a five minute red flag stoppage for fluids to be cleaned up, and there were also less serious accidents for Alex Bowman (on lap 101) and Juan Carlos Blum (on lap 152), but the majority of the eight cautions took place in a stop-start final quarter of the race. Tanner Berryhill spun out in turn 2 on lap 190, Kevin Swindell went around on the backstretch on lap 98, and then there was the biggest accident of the night on lap 211 when Brian Scott, Justin Allgaier and Austin Dillon which left Dillon out of the race with heavy damage.

The final two cautions came in quick succession and were for fluid on the track from the engine of the #01 car of Mike Wallace. Busch took point on the inside ahead of Keselowski for the first time, and while he got a great start the first time he was less emphatic on the second, allowing Keselowski to quickly give chase and then went low to take the lead with nine laps remaining, which he kept all the way to the chequered flag.

"It's very gratifying," said Keselowski in victory lane. "We've had a lot of seconds this year, whether it's here in the Nationwide and we've been really close on the Cup side and just haven't been able to get that win," he continued. "We've struggled here at Richmond too in both the Cup and the Nationwide cars, so it's great to get that turned around and finally get to Victory Lane in a Ford."

Busch waned after losing the lead and with no more cautions in the offing he quickly also succumbed to Harvick's bid for second spot, but the #54 was able to hold onto third place to the finish ahead of his JGR team mate Brian Vickers who finished fourth. Sam Hornish Jr. continues to lead the series points standings after finishing in seventh place in the race, but is now just a single point ahead of Regan Smith who was the highest placed of the Nationwide runners at Richmond on Friday with a fifth place finish.

There were some post-race temper tantrums when Brian Scott and members of his Richard Childress Racing pit crew confronted Nelson Piquet Jr. over allegations that the Turner Motorsports #30 ran Scott into the wall late in the race while the two were competing over 15th place. Both drivers were duly summoned to the NASCAR hauler for a dressing down by officials over the altercation, which turned physical: "When I went to talk to him, he just pushed and shoved me and then kicked me below the belt," Scott said. "It's just a chicken move."

The incident apparently continued later in the driver motorhome area: a police report later said that two men had been taken into custody as part of an ongoing investigation of assault. One man was said to have a shoulder injury. It's not known who was involved or whether either Scott or Piquet were directly involved, but RCR confirmed some of its team members were involved. Piquet's team did not respond to enquiries.
