2013 Charlotte NASCAR: Saturday practice times

All the news and times from the two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Saturday practice sessions at Charlotte Motor Speedway ahead of Sunday's Coke-Cola 600 race.
After a day off yesterday following initial practice and Sprint Cup qualifying for Sunday's Coke-Cola 600 topped by Denny Hamlin and Kurt Busch, the drivers were back in action for two further practice sessions on Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Hendrick Motorsports' Kasey Kahne led the pace both the 55-minute morning session and the afternoon 'happy hour' final practice on the 1.5-mile superspeedway oval. The defending race champion's best laptime came in the morning session (28.185s, 191.591mph) with the afternoon proving slightly slower (28.633s, 188.594mph).

In both cases Kurt Busch posted the next-best time. The Furniture Row Racing drive will start on the front row on Sunday's race alongside pole winner Denny Hamlin.

The two practice sessions were incident-free save for a five minute red flag caused by the #31 car of Jeff Burton laying down fluid on the truck. It turned out that the oil cooler was at fault rather than the car's Chevrolet engine, so a new unit wasn't required. However, the Wood Brothers' #21 did need to have an engine change after practice, which means that Trevor Bayne will have to start from the back of the grid for the start of the Coke-Cola 600. A similar fate awaits Danica Patrick after the engine in the Stewart-Haas #10 developed an oil leak 12 laps into Saturday practice and needed to be changed out.

Burton's Richard Childress Racing team mate Paul Menard was ninth in both practice sessions, the day after he announced a multi-year contract extension with the team. The #27 car will continued to be sponsored by the family business, with Menards the third-largest home improvement retail chain in the US.

"He has shown his ability to be consistent, competitive and win on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series level. He did that in the Brickyard 400 with us at Indy," said team owner Richard Childress, confirming that Menard will continue to be partnered with crew chief Slugger Labbe.

"My family, all of our great team members at Menards and I are excited to extend our partnership with Richard and Richard Childress Racing," said Menard. "We will continue to grow together and build our relationship, achieving even greater accomplishments in the future."
