Michigan: Cup qualifying

Carl Edwards will start from pole position for Sunday's Quicken Loans 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.
Carl Edwards will start Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race from pole position for Roush Fenway Racing after setting a time of 35.564s (202.452mph) on the two-mile Michigan International Speedway.

"I am happy with that lap, I don't think I could go any faster if I ran it again," said Edwards. "There are some really fast cars here. I am really proud of that though.

It's Edwards' 12th pole in 316 Cup starts and his first of 2013, meaning that he is now eligible for the 2014 Sprint Unlimited at Daytona. It's his first pole in 18 races at Michigan, with his previous best start of second place coming last August.

"I don't know if it has changed a lot," said Edwards when asked to compare his run today with the last time the CUp cars ran here. "It seems like the track has aged a little bit which is going to be good.

"If the tyres can fall off a little in the run it will be great, it is so fast," he added. "It is hard to describe what it feels like to go through the corner that fast in a 3,500 lb stock car. It feels like an IndyCar looks to me. I don't know what those feel like, but it stuck!"

Kurt Busch will start alongside Edwards in the #78 Furniture Row Racing car, his fifth top-10 start of 2013 and his ninth in 25 races at Michigan. Kasey Kahne and Paul Menard take up the second row ahead of Aric Almirola and Joey Logano. The sole non-qualifier for the Quicken Loans 400 was Scott Riggs.
