Kentucky: Cup qualifying

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start on pole position for Saturday evening's Quaker State 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Kentucky Speedway.
Hendrick Motorsports' Dale Earnhardt Jr. claimed pole position and set a new lap record in qualifying at Kentucky Speedway on Friday evening. It's the 38-year-old's 12th pole in 486 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races and his first of 2013; his most recent pole before this was at Richmond last September.

Earnhardt's lap of 29.406s (183.636mph) beat the existing track record of 181.818mph set last year by Jimmie Johnson. In total, nine different drivers beat the old track record in this year's time trials.

Carl Edwards will start alongside Earnhardt for the 267-lap, 400-mile Quaker State 400 on Saturday evening, with Johnson being joined by Kyle Busch on the second row of the grid.
