Mid-Ohio: Nationwide results

AJ Allmendinger shone at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on Saturday afternoon as he cruised to an impressive win in the Nationwide Series Children's Hospital 200 road race.
AJ Allmendinger put in a flawless race to win the NASCAR Nationwide Series' first event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course at Lexington, Ohio on Saturday afternoon, even surviving a fraught 'overtime' that forced the fuel-starved field to run four laps longer than originally scheduled. It's Allmendinger's second win in two Nationwide starts in 2013

Michael McDowell had started the race from pole position, only his second start at the front in 88 Nationwide races. He had set his time in the sixth of the eight groups to run on the permanent road course and then watched on as Nelson Piquet Jr., Owen Kelly, Kyle Larson and finally AJ Allmendinger all tried to displace him but just fell short. At the green flag, a number of minor initial incidents - including Kyle Larson spinning out on lap 2 and going three laps down while getting repairs, Brian Vickers making contact with Regan Smith on lap 3 and Sam Hornish Jr. nearly spinning out while passing Smith on lap 8 - didn't provoke a caution, and on lap 9 Allmendinger took over the lead from McDowell and quickly pulled out more than three seconds over the #18. That lead evaporated when the first caution came out on lap 20 for a spin onto the turn 5 grass for Jeffrey Earnhardt. Staying out while others pitted, Max Papis and Austin Dillon led the field to the restart on lap 24 ahead of Hornish, McDowell, Allmendinger and Owen Kelly.

Fresher tyres meant it was comparatively simply for Hornish and Allmendinger to work their way back to first and second by the time the second caution came out after Regan Smith was punted into a spin by rear contact from Elliott Sadler five laps later which saw Papis and Dillon come in for their deferred stops. Allmendinger quickly retook the lead at the restart and kept it through cautions for spins by Justin Allgaier (after contact with Marcos Ambrose on lap 31), Nelson Piquet Jr. (whose late inside move on Parker Kligerman ended in grief on lap 38) and Alex Kennedy (who overdrove turn 9 and buried the #24 in the gravel trap at the halfway point of the 90-lap race.) Travis Pastrana also went off into the tyres in turn 5 on lap 53 and caved in the left rear of the #60 but without triggering a caution. That left the leaders in around lap 57 for their final pit stops, a stall proving costly to young Aussie Owen Kelly. First Papis and then Dillon briefly took the lead but they didn't stay out too long in case a caution wrecked their strategy, and a sixth caution did indeed soon follow on lap 63 after contact between Reed Sorenson and Kenny Habul put both cars off track.

Jostling at the restart on lap 67 saw a number of separate hits, spins and offs for Kligerman, Smith, Dillon, Ron Fellows, Michael Annett, Kyle Kelley and Trevor Bayne, with Papis and Hornish also banging wheels - all of which allowed Allmendinger and McDowell to break away at the front. Ambrose's hopes of making a bid for the front were thwarted by two spins after clashes with first Hornish and then Kligerman that dropped him out of the top ten, while Regan Smith survived an off-road excursion into the tyres at turn 9 on lap 85. Nelson Piquet Jr. had already run into fuel pressure problems in the final laps even before Kenny Habul went off again this time on the penultimate lap to force the race into four laps of green-white-chequered overtime that pushed all the leaders well past the critical point on fuel. Allmendinger had just enough gas left to nail the restart and make it to the flag ahead of McDowell who clinched his first top ten finish of 2013, while Owen Kelly spun out of third place into the gravel in the final run through turn 1 leaving Hornish third ahead of Papis, Vickers, Sadler and Ambrose.

In the championship battle, Hornish's podium finish means that he takes over at the top by 13 points while Elliott Sadler steps into second place in the standings after eventful races left Regan Smith and Austin Dillon in below-par final positions.
