Atlanta: Nationwide results

Once he fought his way back from a poor qualifying position, Kevin Harvick took control of the Saturday night Nationwide race under the floodlights in Atlanta to beat Kyle Busch to the chequered flag.
A dominant Kevin Harvick took his 40th victory in 297 NASCAR Nationwide Series races by beating Kyle Busch to the chequered flag in the Great Clips/Grit Chips 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday night. It's Harvick's first Nationwide win of 2013 in seven appearances this year and represents his 75th victory across Nascar's three national championships with 21 Cup wins, 40 in Nationwide and 14 in Trucks.

Before the race began, a rain-interrupted qualifying saw Kyle Busch once again on pole position for the seventh time this season (his 33rd pole in 262 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts) with a lap of 30.704s (180.563mph), two hundredths of a second faster than Austin Dillon on the 1.54-mile superspeedway. Busch led the race until the first caution for a spin by Robert Richardson Jr. on lap 36 and then fought off a spirited Dillon to resume the lead after a round of pit stops and through a rapid second caution for a spin by Kasey Kahne.

Then on lap 58 Busch finally succumbed to a charging Kevin Harvick who had been flying his way up through the positions since starting in 20th position. After that it was entirely Harvick's night under the lights, as he went on to lead for 132 laps in total of the 195-lap race which saw only two further cautions, one for debris on lap 104 which wiped out a seven-second lead Harvick had built up by that stage, and a final interruption when Jeff Green hit the wall hard coming out of the final turn on lap 182. After having been dominant in so many Nationwide races this season, this time out Busch was forced to accept second place at the line despite throwing everything he could at Harvick in the final seven laps after the restart.

"I had a run on him one time, he blocked my air and put me in the fence, so I had to check up before I got to the fence. It is what it is. Second again," Busch said, having never been able to win a Nationwide race at the fast track. "I could have driven through him and knocked him out of the way, but I try not to do those things - although my reputation doesn't really get perceived that way!"

The two are old enemies off as well as on the track, so it was surprising to hear Harvick admit afterwards: "Kyle Busch isn't my favourite person, but I enjoy racing with him."

In the Nationwide championship standings, third place for Sam Hornish Jr. sees him maintain his lead over Austin Dillon by ten points, with Elliott Sadler falling back after finishing in 18th but still very much in contention for the title along with Regan Smith, Justin Allgaier and Kyle Larson. After the race Larson's car was found to be riding too low at the front as was Nelson Piquet Jr.'s and consequently both men face penalties including possible points deductions.
