Chicagoland: Cup results

Chase top seed Matt Kenseth beat the rain and finally his fellow competitors to take victory in the first race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup play-offs at Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday.
Matt Kenseth took first blood in the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase with a win in the GEICO 400, the first event of the ten-race title play-offs held on Sunday at the 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway.

In a race already delayed by two hours before it could start because of the need to dry the track from earlier rain, there was a further five hour red flag stoppage when more rain fronts passed over the area just before the race reached half distance - which would have made it 'legal' and possible to call the result. Instead, the teams, drivers and fans alike had to wait until nearly 9pm before the race could resume under the floodlights.

Kenseth had been leading at the interval and re-emerged at the front with 23 laps to go to pip his Joe Gibbs Racing team mate Kyle Busch to the chequered flag and claim his 30th victory in his 499th start in the series. It's his sixth win in 2013 alone, a personal record for the 41-year-old in a single season and the first time he's won at Chicagoland. Kenseth led for 89 of the 267 laps, more than anyone else on Sunday, in a race that saw a record number of lead changes (25) among 16 different drivers.

In the Chase, Kenseth leads the point standings by eight points over Busch with Jimmie Johnson a further three points back.
