Dover: Nationwide results

28 September 2013

Joey Logano led for 106 laps of the Saturday afternoon 5-Hour ENERGY 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the one-mile Dover International Speedway to claim his third win of the season and his 21st victory overall by almost 15 seconds over Kyle Larson, after a race remarkably low on cautions which caught out many drivers who were gambling on alternate pit strategies.

Logano started from pole position after having earlier beaten Sam Hornish Jr. to the top spot by three hundredths of a second to claim his first pole of 2013 and his 23rd in 123 Nationwide starts. The Penske Racing driver led for the first 19 of the 200 laps before Busch took advantage of the distraction of a lapped car to go three-wide and claim the top spot shortly before Brian Scott got high and spun on lap 26 for the first caution of the day, with Donnie Neuenberger supplying the second shortly after the restart when he spun into the inside retaining wall.

While others pitted, Busch stayed out to lead at the green flag ahead of first Kyle Larson and subsequently Kevin Harvick before coming in for his deferred first pit stop under green that demoted him to 20th a lap down and allowed Logano to re-take the lead on lap 87, which he kept until his own return to pit road on lap 116. Cole Whitt had a brief three-lap interregnum at the front before the rotation of pit stops (which included a costly speeding penalty for Hornish) inevitably culminated with Busch back at the top on lap 120.

The lack of cautions seemed to be turning the race against Busch's strategic approach and his six second lead over Logano on lap 140 quickly dwindled, and on lap 140 the #22 moved in front once more. Moreover, Logano was reporting no issues with fuel conservation, while Busch had one more visit to pit road to make: without a yellow it would prove very costly. No such caution was forthcoming, and Busch was forced off the lead lap and down to 15th place on lap 177 which left Logano with an 11-second advantage over Larson with Regan Smith ahead of Harvick and Brian Vickers on the lead lap.

Smith couldn't make it to the finish without more fuel and pitted on lap 186, dropping him to 15th place in the standings. Along with Hornish's earlier speeding penalty the race had proved a points bonanza for Austin Dillon who came across the line in sixth place behind Elliott Sadler to close to within four points of Hornish in the championship standings. But there were no last-minute dramas for the race leader Joey Logano of for the other three cars on the lead lap as the chequered flag came out at the conclusion of a straightforward and uneventful Saturday afternoon at the speedway, Busch ultimately left unable to improve on eighth place by the finish.

Logano's victory was somewhat tarnished when the #22 subsequently failed post-race inspection with the front ride height of the car found to be too low on both sides. NASCAR impounded the race car for further inspection and the Penske team may lose owner points for the infraction, although Logano's win is not at risk.
