Las Vegas: Truck results

29 September 2013

Red Horse Racing's Timothy Peters didn't lead on Saturday night until three laps from the end, but a final caution allowed him to pass Ron Hornaday Jr. at the restart and pull out a half-second lead by the line to record his second NASCAR Camping World Truck victory of the year and his seventh in 157 series starts.

"You had to get all you could on the restarts because once you spread out that dirty air, it was bad to pass," said Peters in victory lane afterwards. "I was really thankful for that last caution. I was getting good restarts all night long. Just everything went our way tonight. This is huge!"

With the Sprint Cup and Nationwide series regulars at work on the east coast this weekend, Ty Dillon took advantage of a smaller than usual field to clinch his first pole of the season at the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the Smith's 350 Truck race, with Justin Lofton starting alongside the Richard Childress Racing driver on the front row. Dillon led for the first 15 laps until the first round of stops under caution which occurred when Miguel Paludo pun out of sixth place while battling with James Buescher. The race off pit lane was won by Matt Crafton who quickly took the lead from Brendan Gaughan who had opted to stay out. Crafton pulled out a five-length lead before Brennan Newberry spun in turn 4 on lap 28 which allowed Gaughan to take the lead at the restart and then Ross Chastain to get to the front on lap 37.

Chastain was boxed in by Buescher on pit road - sparking a confrontation between the crews - and fell out of the top ten for the restart which was headed by Kyle Busch Motorsport rookie Darrell Wallace Jr. who maintained the lead through the next yellow on lap 61 when Hornaday Jr. nudged his NTS Motorsports team mate Newberry into a spin through turn 4 while contesting sixth place. Wallace initially continued to lead at the restart but was passed by pole man Dillon on lap 68 before Chastain slide into the infield grass on lap 74 to bring out the fifth caution of the evening. Gaughan and Ryan Blaney stayed off pit road and took turns to lead after the restart, but they were in under the next caution on lap 92 for a second spin of the night for Bryan Silas. Lofton stayed out and picked up the lead for a brief restart before the yellows were back out again on lap 97 for contact between Newberry and Matthew Kurzejewski which put the #81 into the outside wall.

Lofton was easy prey for Wallace at the restart, but it was Crafton who was coming on strongest of all and who took the top spot on lap 104 which survived the next caution on lap 109 for Chad Hackenbracht spinning onto the grass in turn 4. Hornaday got the best restart and set his sights on passing Crafton for the lead for the first time in the race which finally happened on lap 119, Crafton soon fading all the way out of the top ten thereafter. The only driver to have the pace to go with the #9 at the front was Peters, and with ten laps to go he was all over the back of Hornaday's truck but still not quite able to make the move before the final caution of the race on lap 140 triggered by Jennifer Jo Cobb's right-front tyre blowing out and planting the #10 into the wall in turn 2. That gave Peters the chance he needed to jump a sluggish Hornaday at the restart, and he then easily won the final two-lap sprint shootout to claim the chequered flag ahead of a late charge from Johnny Sauter.

Despite waning in the final laps, Crafton retains a 41 point lead in the championship over Buescher, with Dillon and Jeb Burton holding station in third and fourth with five races remaining in the 2013 season.
