Carl Edwards claimed pole position for this weekend's AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway with a qualifying lap of 27.650s (195.298mph) on the 1.5-mile oval, edging reigning champion Brad Keselowski by just two thousandths of a second for the top spot.

It's the 34-year-old's 13th pole position of the year and his 13th pole in 335 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races. It's Edwards' first pole at Texas in 18 outings at the track. "This is huge, my guys did a great job," said Edwards. "It is awesome for Aflac and Ford and all of us. I have wanted the pole here so badly for so long, it is just really cool.

"I don't think the lap was that spectacular from a driving standpoint and I messed up off turn two but turns three and four were great and we got the pole so that was a lot of fun," he elaborated. "It is so neat to get a pole and the guys brought us to victory lane and we got to celebrate and that is a lot of fun. It is a big day for us."

"We had a really decent lap for sure going but I thought I left a little bit out there," admitted Keselowski for his part. "We will have a great starting spot for here which is so important. Track position is important for the pit stalls. You want to have a good pit stall here because that can be the whole race for you. I know we are starting up front but I also know we left a little out there so I am a little disappointed in myself."

Edwards and Keselowski dislodged long-time provisional pole sitter Jimmie Johnson form the top spot, and the #48 will duly start from third place on the second row of the grid alongside Paul Menard. Johnson was lucky to save his car during the qualifying lap and delivered a glancing blow to the outside wall with the right rear of the car at one stage before gathering it up, the five-time champion admitting that at one point he may have had his eyes closed.

"I think the lap time was reasonable," said Johnson. "You saw the effort needed to keep it off the fence. It's slippery out there ... We went faster than we did in practice, so hopefully that is a good sign and we can keep the #48 up top.

"I was committed to the throttle off of turn 4 and just kind of ran out of room. And I hate to admit it, but at one point I think I had my eyes shut because I knew there was going to be contact," he added. "I just didn't know how much. But, I just grazed the wall and scratched the sticker for the bumper cover and tail light on the back of the car."

Row three sees an all-Joe Gibbs Racing line-up, with team mate Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth due to line up alongside each other for the start of Saturday afternoon's race, while row four is taken up by the Hendrick Motorsports pair of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon. The fourth Hendrick car, the #5 of Kasey Kahne, will start from 11th where he lines up with Keselowski's Penske team mate Joey Logano.

Ryan Newman will start from 13th place, with Greg Biffle lining up in 18th place just ahead of Kevin Harvick. Clint Bowyer slumped to 26th place in qualifying, while the lowest of the 13 Chase contenders is Kurt Busch who will take the green flag in 31st place.
