Phoenix: Cup results

Kevin Harvick claimed his fourth win of the year after Carl Edwards ran out of fuel with a lap to go in Sunday afternoon's AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway.
Kevin Harvick seized the opportunity to clinch one more win for Richard Childress Racing before he exits the team at the end of the season, with victory in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday afternoon.

It's Harvick's fourth victory and 20th top-10 finish in 2013, and his 23rd victory in 465 Cup races. It's the fourth time that he's won at Phoenix, and came at the end of a three-hour event that saw him lead for a race-high 70 of the 312 laps.

It seemed that Harvick's chances of winning were over when he ran out of fuel before he could make it onto pit lane for his final stop of the day, but he rallied to run in second place behind Carl Edwards and was perfectly positioned to pick up the lead when the #99 itself ran out of fuel within sight of the white flag.

Harvick crossed the line 1.796s ahead of Kasey Kahne, with Jimmie Johnson a second further back in third place having escaped two early scares in the race that could easily have devastated his hopes of picking up a sixth Cup championship.

Instead, with chief rival Matt Kenseth suffering a dreadful day of handling issues in the #20 car, it was Johnson who emerged from the day's action with the biggest smile as he carries a 28 point lead into next weekend's season finale in Florida, all but assuring him of clinching the 2013 championship at Homestead-Miami.
