Homestead: Truck results

16 November 2013

Pretty much the only thing that Matt Crafton had to do to be confirmed as the new NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion on Friday night was to actually turn up for the start of the race. Once that was achieved he was able to have a nice, safety-first evening of it on his way to a solid midfield finish secure in the knowledge that the title was his.

"It's an honour," said an emotional Crafton in victory lane, giving his thanks to ThorSport Racing team owners Duke and Rhonda Thorson for whom he has raced for 18 years, and were rewarded by their first championship in the team's history. "For [sponsors] Menards and all the people that have been behind me, and every one of these guys that work on this truck, it's an honour to be able to give them this championship. These guys are the ones that work so hard. I'm just the one who gets to celebrate and look like a hero, because I get to drive a great truck all year."

Crafton's winning margin in the championship by the end was 40 points over Ty Dillon, with the standings so well spaced out going into the season finale at the 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway that there were no position changes at all in the top ten as a result of the final 148-lap race of the year.

Earlier in the evening, Ryan Blaney had won his second pole of the year in 31 Truck Series starts to put him on the front row alongside Johnny Sauter for the start of the Ford EcoBoost 200 under the floodlights. Blaney led the first eight laps, lost the lead briefly to Sauter after a restart following an early debris caution, but quickly regained it and continued to head the field for the next 40 laps which included an accident for Joey Coulter spinning out in turn 4 on lap 44.

Blaney won the race off pit road and initially kept the lead at the restart but was overtaken by champion-elect Crafton on lap 50 for the next dozen laps. Blaney briefly recaptured the lead before another debris caution on lap 64 which allowed Kyle Busch to win the race off pit road and lead the field to the green flag, but Blaney wasn't going away and had moved back to the front by the time he ran up high and scraped the wall in turn 4 while battling with Busch on lap 93. That led to a messy restart attempt on lap 101 which saw Spencer Gallagher collide with Nelson Piquet Jr.

2011 Truck Series champion turned current Nationwide regular Austin Dillon came on strong at the next green flag, flying past Brendan Gaughan for second place and then vying with Busch for the lead. Dillon's burst proved shortlived however and by lap 117 Busch has a secure grip on the lead that would last through to the conclusion of the race despite two further cautions, the first on lap 130 for Jeb Burton hitting the wall and the second at the ensuing restart on lap 136 when Joey Coulte and Brennan Newberry made contact on the backstretch which also caught up Matt Crafton. Fortunately Crafton wa able to continue, while Burton rallied from his own solo mishap to finish in third place behind Busch and Blaney and just ahead of Brendan Gaughan, Ron Hornaday Jr. and John Wes Townley.

While Crafton celebrated clinching the title, Kyle Busch was able to finish his limited Truck season in victory lane with his fifth win of the year and his 35th in 115 series starts. Busch also collected the trophy for winning the series team owners' championship.
