Homestead: Cup results

Jimmie Johnson successfully clinched his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup championship on Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway, in a race that saw Denny Hamlin claim his first win of the 2013 season.
Denny Hamlin signed off what had been up to now a deeply frustrating season in NASCAR Sprint Cup competition with the perfect riposte - by clinching victory in the Ford EcoBoost 400 under the setting sun at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

It's Hamlin's first (and inevitably last) win of the season, a year which saw him forced to sit out four races after he injured his back in a crash at Fontana just before Easter, an absence which effectively put paid to his hopes of making the 2013 Chase.

Instead it was his new team mate Matt Kenseth who emerged as the chief challenger to Jimmie Johnson in the championship stakes over the course of the season, and Kenseth signed off on his first year with Joe Gibbs Racing by finishing in second place at Homestead, eighth tenths of a second behind Hamlin at the line having led for 144 of the 267 laps of the season finale at the 1.5-mile speedway.

But that wasn't enough to allow Kenseth to overcome the 28 point deficit in the championship to points leader Jimmie Johnson after Johnson survived a mid-race scare which saw the two title rivals collide in a messy restart to finish in ninth place at the end of three hours of racing.

That put Johnson 19 points clear of Kenseth in the final standings, and means that Johnson finally picks up that coveted sixth title after being denied in recent years by Tony Stewart in 2011 and by Brad Keselowski in 2012, who signed off his year as champion with a sixth place finish at Homestead.

The race also saw Juan Pablo Montoya finish in 18th place in his final outing in NASCAR competition. Mark Martin finished one place further back, with the 54-year-old strongly hinting that he won't be back in a race car again in 2014.
