Qualifying times: Brickyard 400.

Casey Mears drove the #41 Target Chip Ganassi Dodge to a second NASCAR Nextel Cup pole position in two races at Indianapolis, and will be hoping to turn it into his first win in Sunday's Brickyard 400. He follows the example of his uncle Rick Mears who won six poles and four races in the Indianapolis 500.

Ward Burton's Netzero Chevrolet and the M&M's Ford of Elliott Sadler will start second and third while leading championship contenders Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon start ninth and 11th. Dale Earnhardt Jr set fifth position and is confident of completing the race on Sunday, burns suffered in a sports car race last month having healed enough for Earnhardt not to require the assistance of a reserve driver.

Qualifying times, Brickyard 400, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indiana, round 21 of the 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.
