AJ Allmendinger

AJ Allmendinger

After losing his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series seat at Penske Racing in 2012 following a positive drugs test, AJ Allmendinger was on the comeback trail this season. Briefly flirting with the idea of a return to open-wheel racing in the IndyCar Series (he even raced in his first Indianapolis 500 in May) it was soon clear that Allmendinger's heart remained in stock cars where he took part-time rides with Phoenix Racing and JTG Daugherty Racing in the hope of a long-term deal arising. With 18 races in total and an average finish of 21.2, his efforts were finally rewarded when he was handed the full-time ride with the latter for 2014.
