Showdown for Beebe

by Geoff Mayes

Reigning R3 British Rally champion Matt Beebe heads to the final round of the Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship, Wales Rally GB, in the midst of a three-way fight for the 2007 R2 class title and with double points on offer it's all to play for.

Beebe has clinched at least one major championship title every year since he began rallying but heads to Wales with only two world rally championship starts under his belt.

However, after winning his class en-route to finishing as first production class two-wheel drive home on the 2006 event, the young service technician then clinched the BRC two-wheel drive Group N title on last years event.

Despite facing the might of the 'works' Suzuki Swifts, Beebe has continued to impress throughout 2007, even though his budget has to be one of the smallest in the championship. Furthermore on the back of a highly successful test recently Matt, who will be co-driven once more by Welshman Gareth Roberts, heads to Cardiff in a confident mood.

“The fight for the title is incredibly close this year but with double the points on offer it could go anyone's way,” said the Crash.net columnist.

“Our strategy is to ease ourselves into the first few stages and then see where we are, pace wise, before launching an attack. I recently did a test in Mid Wales and thanks to some new dampers from AVO the car handles really well now.”

Beebe, whose m3motorsport and North Warwickshire and Hinckley College run MG is backed by Eastern Airways, PIAA and AVO, is currently 16 points adrift of the class leading Suzuki. However with the Wales Rally GB split into two points scoring rallies for the BRC runners there is a maximum of 40 points still on offer.
