Gwyndaf Evans launched a new two-car team at the Autosport International Show this week.
Crash.net Radio caught up with the Welshman to find out about that and his involvement in 'Junior Rallying' as the chief instructor...
Crash.net:
Gwyndaf, lets start with the 'Junior Rallying' programme, how excited are you to be involved with that?
Gwyndaf Evans:
I am quite excited actually. They approached me quite a while ago now. I have done some tuition work over the years and they asked me if I would be interested in doing that with them. I like working with youngsters at the end of the day. It is so rewarding to see young talents coming through and now I am looking forward to acting as the chief instructor for the 'Junior Rallying'.
Crash.net:
Now tell us about that other announcement...
GE:
We have just opened today a new company, GEMsport and we are going to give an 18-year-old [Meilyr Evans] and a 19-year-old [Elfyn Evans - my son] a fantastic programme this year. Then in the future we hope to bring some of the young talents from 'Junior Rallying' onto our team. It will be a natural progression of learning.
Crash.net:
The two programmes should compliment each other then?
GE:
Absolutely, I think 'Junior Rallying' echoes me.
Crash.net:
Obviously with 'Junior Rallying' you are the chief instructor. What will that role entail and how much of your time will it take up?
GE:
I probably won't get involved quite so much behind the scenes with driver preparation and actually physiques and fitness and diets and all that. It will be more hands on in terms of understanding chassis work, car set-ups and actually the application of driving.
Crash.net:
This year your son, Elfyn and Meilyr Evans will both drive for GEMsport in the Fiesta Sporting Trophy series in the UK and Ireland. Last season Elfyn finished third in the FSTUK standings. What do you want to see him achieve this season and what do you want to see Meilyr do?
GE:
I want Elfyn to grab the opportunity GEMsport is giving him - and also Meilyr too. I want both of them to make the most of this chance and give their best. They cannot do anymore. I cannot make them win. I can only provide help and provide the tools and support and the backing that GEMsport can give. Ultimately it will be down to them. They will have to drive the car and if they can't win that is not the be all and end all. But certainly they need to apply themselves properly.
Crash.net:
They will be doing the Fiesta Trophy series' in the UK and Ireland. That's quite a comprehensive programme, with 12 events in total...
