Q&A: James Wozencroft - EXCLUSIVE.

James Wozencroft enjoyed a very solid season in the MSA British Rally Championship in 2008, finishing sixth provisionally in the standings despite missing the double points' scoring Wales Rally GB. Crash.net Radio's Matt Salisbury spoke to James to look back at 2008 and find out his plans for 2009...


Crash.net:
James, how do you feel 2008 went for you?

James Wozencroft:
We had a fantastic season. It was the first time I had driven a four-wheel drive car in the British championship and we had three top-four results and I was really, really pleased with that. We never quite got on the podium but that is one for this year. All-in-all the season was really good. Unfortunately we couldn't compete on Rally GB and that was a bit of a blow for us. But apart from that I had a great year.

Crash.net:
How difficult was it moving up to a four-wheel drive car?

JW:
I was expecting it to be a lot more difficult than it actually was. When I drove a Super 1600 car, that was quite difficult to acclimatise too, but I found the four-wheel drive car really nice. It suited my driving style and I got in it and drove it quite well from the beginning. It wasn't really an issue. I didn't concentrate too hard on other people's times. I was just trying to do the best I could.

Crash.net:
I do recall though you had quite a big accident on one of the events...

JW:
Yeah, the Ulster Rally. It was a very fast section and we were up in fifth gear and had been in fifth for a long time and doing well over a 100 mph. There were two big jumps, one after the other, and the car got out of sync after the first one and we had quite a big roll over the second one. We could have done without that. But other than that it was a good year.

Crash.net:
Do you think the BRC is one of the most challenging championships around?

JW:
I think it probably is. There are three tarmac rounds in the championship and they are all very different and all very challenging. The BRC is the only championship to use the Manx International too. It is a fantastic rally and you don't get roads like that in any other series. It is a one-off. It is quite a thrill to be doing those sorts of events. I absolutely love them.

Crash.net:
Looking to this year, what is the state of play for 2009?

JW:
We are getting there with a programme. We are still a long way off a similar place to everybody else. It is tough times at the moment and we haven't secured a budget. But we are working really hard and I am trying to get a four-wheel drive in the BRC. Fingers crossed we can sort something.

Crash.net:
It must be quite frustrating coming off quite a strong season, but then with the economic climate the way it is, everything still grinds to a halt a bit...

JW:
Absolutely. We think we have had a great year and it is a shame when it is so difficult to move on. But it is not just me. If you look at guys like Guy Wilks, who has had an exceptional year, and he is struggling to find something too. Unfortunately it is just the way things are at the moment and we have just got to keep trying hard.
