Lico UK will launch a new rally scholarship aimed at assisting the grass roots of the sport in 2009, it has been confirmed.

A statement to the media explained:

"Lico UK, one of the leaders in motor sport supplies, have confirmed their involvement with the BTRDA Rally Series, the Welsh Association of rally championships and the 205cup/ RWD challenge.

"This affiliation will see numerous cost saving benefits to the competitors of these value for money championships and at the same time provide the funding to assist future stars progress to the next level.

"The arrangement between Lico UK and the championships will see all registered competitors receive a 10 per cent discount on all Lico products bought from the official outlet.

"With products covering everything from helmets and race suits right through to seats and harnesses this discount is aimed at helping the budget minded competitor ensure that they are equipped with quality goods at an affordable price.

"Over and above this incentive scheme, a further 10 per cent from all purchases by competitors will be transferred to a fund to assist three scholarship winners in 2010. This scholarship will only be available to people who are under the age of 25 on the 1st of January 2009.

"The recipient of the BTRDA prize will be the leading young driver in either the Millers Oils BTRDA 1400 Championship or the BTRDA Rally First Challenge.

"The recipient from the 205cup/RWD Challenge will be the winner of an end of year shootout, arranged by championship coordinator Pat Flynn.

"The recipient of the Welsh Association of rally championships division of the prize will be the winner of an end of year shootout amongst the top under 25 year olds in each class of the various Welsh rally championships.

"The programme for these three recipients will be based on the budget raised by the end of the 2009 season. Details of this budget will be available to all registered competitors upon request to ensure total transparency of the scheme."

Scholarship co-ordinator Mick Jones meanwhile is keen to emphasise that this project is about finding and funding future talent.

"Our goal with this project is to support grass roots rallying and to help find a rough diamond that can be supported to the very top," he noted. "Lico UK are in the unique position by selling direct to the customer, eliminating the need for distributors.

"This saving allows us to support a scheme like this, whilst at the same time reinforcing our brand - a win, win situation for all parties concerned!"
