Euan Thorburn, at the wheel of a Revolution Wheels backed Subaru Impreza N12, impressed on the Jim Clark International Rally as the 23-year-old - who ran as high as second for most of the rally - was awarded the Pirelli Star Driver nomination for the event.
After a frustrating start to his debut BRC season, Thorburn was able to put the nightmare of the past two rounds of Britain's premier championship behind him with a level headed and mature drive throughout the two-day event.
After six tricky stages on Friday night, Thorburn and co-driver Claire Mole were placed second overall amongst the British Championship contenders. Despite changeable weather conditions on Saturday the pair were on course for a well-deserved podium finish until a broken driveshaft in the penultimate stage dropped the Revolution Wheels driver down to fourth in class.
At the finish a panel of judges determined that Thorburn had impressed mightily on what was only his third ever rally in the premier rally championship in the country and awarded the talented youngster the Pirelli Star Driver nomination. At the end of the year the nominated 'star' drivers compete in a shootout with the winner receiving a full seasons works drive the next year.
Meanwhile the good news continued for the Revolution Wheels Rally Team as Geoff Jones, making a welcome return to competition, entertained on his way to seventh overall in a Geoff Jones Motorsport run Subaru Impreza N14 that was only completed on the day of the rally.
Jones, who normally assists from a technical point of view, was standing in for Rob Swann who was away contesting Rally Barbados. Co-driven by Sam Collis Welshman Jones joined Thorburn in scoring valuable team points.
“To have both cars finish in the points is always a nice way to finish a rally, but to have one of our drivers awarded the Pirelli Star Drive is something special,” team principal Warren McKiernan said. “Euan really impressed this weekend and has hopefully shown that he is a talent worth watching!
“As for Geoff, well to come back to this highly competitive championship after a break of almost ten years and run inside the top ten from the word go is incredible. Let's hope we can continue this type of performance for the rest of the year now.”
Whilst the next round of the MSA British Rally Championship, the Isle of Man, takes place in early July, the team will be represented next weekend when Rob Swann and Darren Garrod contest Rally Barbados at the wheel of their Revolution Wheels Subaru Impreza N14.
