Neville Jones enjoyed his best ever run on the Newtown-based Rally Marketing Mid Wales Stages last weekend when he brought his Vulcan Fasteners-backed Subaru Impreza N12 home in 13th place overall - and fifth in class.
Jones has never faired well on this event before, a fact which he finds puzzling seeing as how he rates the mid Wales forest stages as some of the best he has ever competed on.
Indeed last year his rally ended less than three miles into the opening stage when he slid into a ditch.
Fortunately though, the 2009 rally went much better. Jones was disappointed to drop a fair bit of time on the opening stage, blaming no one but himself for the tardy start, but over the next four stages he increased his pace and gradually climbed the leader-board.
Using a very similar route to when he had tackled Wales Rally GB in December of 2008, he was happy to end the day with a top five class finish.
“I had a bit of a slow start in the morning, but once I'd woken up we really upped our pace,” said Neville, who was co-driven by Ian Capewell.
“The car, as always, ran faultlessly, and a big thanks to Geoff Jones Motorsport for lending me an engine whilst mine is away. I'm happy with my driving at the moment. I know where I am losing time and I now aim to work on that in time for my next outing, which is on the Quinton Stages.”
