Gould: I feel terrible for the team

Pirelli Star Driver Adam Gould retired from a potential podium position on the penultimate round of the MSA British Rally Championship, the Ulster International Rally last weekend.

The 21-year-old was returning to the series for the first time following a big accident on the previous event and despite a cautious run the Ulster lanes would hold more disappointment for the Bristol-born youngster.

Indeed despite both Gould's vigilance and a handful of troubles early in the Antrim-based, two-day event, the Pirelli-backed Subaru Impreza WRX was running in third place. But, in the 17-mile Slieve Gallion test, his event ended with damage to the left-rear quarter of the car.

"I was caught out by the car jumping further than I'd expected on this section. The car landed on the wet grass and we spun,” Gould explained. “The left-rear wheel clouted a fence post in the spin, this cracked the wheel and damaged the suspension. We were left at the side of the road, massively disappointed.

"I feel terrible for the whole team. Everybody had told me how much I needed to finish this rally. I knew how much I had to finish this rally and that's exactly what I was going to do.

“It's easy to say this has to be put down to experience, it's something I should have picked up on the recce and I'll be ready for it next time, but at the end of the day I've cost the TEG Sport team, Pirelli, my co-driver Seb [Marshall] and myself the chance of another result.

"And that's not good enough - particularly after all the work which had gone into getting the car ready for this event."
