FST: Breen does double, secures IRC Scotland drive

Craig Breen wrapped up both the UK and Irish 2009 Ford FiestaSport Trophy titles on the Ulster International Rally last weekend.

Breen knew what he needed to do in order to ensure he took championship glory and he drove impeccably, pushing arch rival Kris Hall all weekend, after Matt Edwards, the other driver in contention for the UK Fiesta series, crashed out in the early stages.

Breen was 15.9 seconds behind Hall going into day two, but when Hall went out in the very first stage, SS7, the 19-year-old could afford to ease off. He eventually brought his car home over a minute up on his closest FST rival, Robbie Barrable – and 17th overall.

His title successes means he will now been given the opportunity to compete in the new Fiesta R2 on two events - namely the final round of the 2009 Intercontinental Rally Challenge, the International Rally of Scotland and the Condroz International Rally Belgium.

“This weekend has been absolutely amazing, it still has not sunk in for me,” said Breen. “To win both the Irish and UK FST series is just a dream come true. It was a shame the event battle with Kris did not last all event because it was great fun. Overall it has been a great season and I couldn't ask for anything more!”

“It is just fabulous [to get the two prize drives],” he added. “For winning the UK series we now get to contest the IRC Rally Scotland in the new R2 Fiesta which will be awesome, and for the Irish series we get a drive in the R2 on the Belgian tarmac Condroz Rally.

“Added to that we have a place in the FST International Shoot-out at the end of the season, it's really been a season way beyond our expectations to date.”

Breen's focus now shifts to the Rally Catalunya and back to the FST International series, where he has a chance of taking a third title.

”Catalunya and Rally GB are left on the FST International calendar, but I really need to score a win in Spain and set as many fastest stage times as possible,” he continued.
