Dave Weston Junior will be swapping a 44 tonne truck for his Ramsport Subaru Impreza this weekend for the climax to the 2009 MSA British Rally Championship, International Rally Yorkshire.
The 19-year-old has recently become one of the youngest people in Britain to take the wheel of an LGV with a combination weight of 44 tonnes, having passed his test thanks to being put on a nationwide Young LGV Driver Scheme by his employer John Lawrie Group.
“I'm not sure that driving the artic will help me with Yorkshire, but they do say all time behind a steering wheel is good time,” joked Junior. “It's an odd feeling for me going into the final round of the BRC. I'm lying fourth in the points, and people are telling me I could finish higher up than that if the people in front of me have problems, but I will approach Yorkshire like all other events, and see where we end up. It's exciting to be up there in the points in my first year though.”
Junior goes into Yorkshire with the knowledge that he secured fourth overall on the event last year - and that was before he had a year's BRC experience under his belt. He is also going into the event armed with a new co-driver, former British champion David Higgins' regular co-driver Ieuan Thomas.
“I've not made my own notes on gravel very often, so it's crucial to get it right first time in Yorkshire and I'm confident we can do that with Ieuan,” Junior continued. “We contested a rally in Ireland together earlier this year and gelled really quickly to achieve a good result, which we hope to repeat in Yorkshire.”
In preparation for the BRC finale the pair also ran as course car on the Merrick Forest Stages Rally. On top of that Junior has undertaken more training with Mark Higgins who will also be competing in Yorkshire in an attempt to lift his fourth British championship title.
“Whatever the outcome of the championship for me, I've had a great year in the BRC and achieved much more than I could have dreamed of when I began the season as a rookie,” Junior added. “And from Yorkshire I'll go straight to Rally Spain, then on to Rally of Great Britain – with various outings in the artic in between!”
International Rally Yorkshire takes place on Saturday 26th September, based in Pickering Showground.
Junior will also launch a new website in time for his outing in Yorkshire, which can be found at www.westonjunior.com
