Pirelli Star Driver Adam Gould will start Saturday's final round of this year's MSA British Rally Championship, International Rally Yorkshire, with the sole aim of helping his team become champions.
TEG Sport, the Lancashire-based preparation experts, have guided Gould through his first full season at the highest level of British rallying and the 22-year-old is on-course to pay them and Pirelli back through the fast and flowing North Yorkshire stages on Saturday.
Despite never having contested a rally in a four-wheel drive Group N car prior to the start of this year, he has fully justified the faith placed in him and his driving ability as Pirelli Star Driver; he was fourth on his first event and collected his first podium two rallies later. This weekend, however, Gould's fully focused on the MSA British Teams' Championship.
As well as the Teams' Cup, TEG Sport is also firmly involved in the fight for the Drivers' title as well. Adam's team-mate Mark Higgins chases a fourth British crown. With his team-mate's success in mind, Gould has stepped out of his latest-specification Subaru Impreza WRX and handed it over to Mark, in an effort to afford him the best possible opportunity this week.
"My first priority was to make sure Pirelli was happy with this," said Adam, who will be co-driven by Sebastian Marshall. "Pirelli have been amazing with me this year. When I won the Pirelli Star Driver award last December, I could never have believed the kind of support and input Pirelli would have given me throughout this season.
“Once it was clear Pirelli was comfortable with Mark and I swapping cars, I had no hesitation. Mark has been a great mentor me for me this year and I want to do all I can to help him. The car I have been using will have a few tweaks and a new engine ready for Yorkshire; Mark will have the whole team behind him.
"It's not just Mark, though. Saturday could be a double celebration if we can score good points and put TEG Sport in a position to win the teams' title. It would be the perfect end to the season for TEG, Pirelli, Seb and myself."
Gould will drive Mark's 2005-specification Subaru Impreza in Yorkshire: a car he's already on good terms with.
"Mark's Impreza was the first Group N four-wheel drive car I drove in anger," Gould continued, "and I used it to win the Pirelli Star Driver shootout last year. Hopefully, we can keep that good run going! It's a fantastic car. I tested it in Wales last week and it was great, it's such a forgiving and comfortable car to drive. As always, I can't wait to get on with the rally!"
Like his contemporaries in Yorkshire, Gould will spend much of his time in top gear with the speedo reading well into three figures as he races down Dalby forest's fastest straights.
"Dalby is really fast," Gould added. "We came here in a Renault Clio last year, so I reckon we'll be going about 30mph faster this time. It's going to be fantastic. We're going to make a new set of pace notes for the rally, but the key thing here is to keep it neat and tidy; no mistakes. This is a one-day rally where we won't have the mileage available to make up for any small errors.
"It's also the final chapter of my time as 2009 Pirelli Star Driver, so I'm massively keen to go out on a high. I'll be doing everything I can to help TEG Sport and Mark win their titles. Doing so would be the perfect 'thank you' for everything Pirelli and TEG have done for Seb and I this season."
