Weston Jr: I won't hold back on Rally of Scotland

Rally of Scotland IRC challenge ahead for local lad Dave Weston Junior.
Teenage driver Dave Weston Junior says this weekend's Rally of Scotland will be a huge challenge for him, despite being born and bred in Scotland.

The 19-year-old may have impressed his peers this year by finishing fourth overall in his first year in the British Rally Championship, but his experience of rallying in Scotland is limited.

"I might be from Scotland, but the only real experience I have of rallying there is from doing the Jim Clark as part of the BRC, and we ran as course car on the Merrick this year," said Weston Jr. "So I'm not going into this rally thinking I'm local and I know it all, nothing could be further from the truth, it will be newer to me than some of the other drivers who live elsewhere but have been rallying for longer.

"But that's not going to hold me back. Every new rally stage is a great learning experience for someone my age, so I really enjoy them, doing that first recce and making my own notes - I compete for the challenge, and that's what I'll get in Scotland."

With his father, Dave Weston Senior, having been Scottish Rally champion in 2006, Junior has certainly grown up with the Scottish rallying fraternity and around the stages - just not on them.

But he cannot wait to get onto them for the inaugural British round of the IRC, behind the wheel of his Ramsport-run Subaru Impreza N14.

"It's a real honour for Scotland to be hosting the first British IRC event, and as a young Scottish driver I feel privileged to be in a position to compete on it," Weston Jr continued.

"It's really exciting to have the championship in my home country, especially with Kris Meeke being British and the new champion, it's an inspiration of what is achievable with hard work. It will be interesting to compare my times against his, just like when you do Rally of Great Britain and can compare yourself against the likes of Sebastien Loeb."

Weston Jr's co-driver Ieuan Thomas will travel back from China to contest the event straight after his attack on the Longyou Rally there, where he is co-driving for former British champion David Higgins as part of their attack on the Chinese Rally Championship.

Junior and Thomas are seeded at number eight on the event.
