I want to win Pirelli International, says Cronin

Pirelli Star Driver Keith Cronin says he really wants to win the Pirelli International Rally this coming weekend.
Pirelli's Star Driver Keith Cronin is buzzing ahead of the Pirelli International Rally this weekend and is keen to continue his good run and achieve victory in the second round of the 2010 Dulux Trade MSA British Rally Championship.

Cronin won the first BRC event, the Bulldog International Rally in North Wales, in March with a time more than two minutes faster than closest competitor on the day, Dave Weston Junior.

Now his sights are set on the Pirelli International Rally this coming weekend: “It should be good. The stages in Carlisle last year were really fast and it will be interesting to see how I get on in the new car,” he noted.

“Pirelli has invested a lot in me through the Star Driver programme so I really want to win this race. I take each rally at a time though, and anything can happen in this competition against some really tough opponents. I know I can do it though, so it couldn't come any sooner.”

Each year the Pirelli Star Driver programme selects the outstanding racers from the BRC and brings them together at the end of the season for a two day shoot-out for the ultimate prize of a fully funded drive the following season. Cronin won this event last year and is therefore representing Pirelli as their Star Driver throughout the 2010 season.

Pirelli Motorsport director Paul Hembery meanwhile has wished him all the best as he prepares for the Carlisle-based event.

“Keith had an outstanding 2009 and we all wish him the best of luck for this year. Hopefully he will push on this season, and with Pirelli behind him, he'll have everything he needs to successfully defend his title. He has certainly begun his season as well as can be expected,” Hembery added.

As I said before rallying as a whole needs a revamp. Cars gone too technically advanced for average man in street to be able to afford to run them never mind purchase them. When group n was first brought out it was supposed to be for privateer not for works teams. Remember the past British Championship contenders Colin/Jimmy Mcrae, Brookes, Llewelin,Wilson,Lovel, how they would go on to do RAC at end of year and get a decent top 3 result or maybe better. The Mantas,Escorts,Sierras were lot more basic compared to whats out today. Also then you had BRC covered by terrestrial tv stations ITV/BBC. Now all they cover is the roundy, roundy stuff F1 and BTCC.

We still go and watch rounds of the national though. Rally Sunseeker is one of the best events of the year for us. What is the BRC for now? I mean its great for Higgins to come back, but what has he got to prove? And if Cronin wins the championship for a second year, is it gonna launch his WRC career? Cant see it myself.
