Walker a class act on Coracle Stages.

by Geoff Mayes

Paul Walker recovered from an early time loss to stage a sensational fight back on the Coracle Stages last weekend, eventually finishing fifth overall and taking the production class win after seven hot and action packed stages.

Walker and his co-driver Vern Brown, were late entries into the event and whilst the Green Paw Engineering supported Subaru Impreza was running with car #57 on the door the pair were slotted inside the top-ten on the running order.

Whilst Walker himself admits to occasionally being a slow starter even he was frustrated by his opening stage times, caused by boost problems. This issue was rectified at the first service, but the time loss after the opening loop of stages would be difficult to claw back.

However, by the fourth stage, Walker and Brown were on a charge and the Geoff Jones Motorsport-assisted Subaru was never outside the top-three in class for the duration of the day.

Even an overshoot on the final stage of the rally did not hinder them too much, as the pair went on to record the third fastest overall stage time en-route to a well deserved class victory.

“To say we are happy with this result is an understatement,” he reflected. “After the opening two stages I was ready to pack up and head home but thankfully Geoff Jones helped sort the problem out and from then on Vern and I didn't look back. The car was great, and full credit to the organisers for putting on a brilliant event.”

Walker and Brown are currently contesting both the MSA Welsh National Rally Championship and the Millers Oils Welsh Clubman's Championship. Walker not only leads the Group N category of the National Championship, but he is also second overall. Vern tops the co-drivers leader-board with three of the nine rounds still to be contested. After the Coracle Stages they have both extended their leads in the Clubman's Championship.

Walker and Brown will next be out in action on the Neath Valley Rally, which takes place on August 16.
