Irish crew Brian O'Mahony and John Higgins finished a tough Rallye Deutschland last weekend under the SupeRally.
The pair came home 42nd overall in their OM Concrete Products and MIS-backed Super 1600 Renault Clio in round ten of the World Rally Championship after overcoming a string of problems.
The first blow came on stage four when the gearbox broke in the car running ahead of them and spilled out oil on a blind corner which caused O'Mahony and Higgins to understeer and hit a wall on the outside, putting them temporarily out of action.
They rejoined the fray on day two under SupeRally rules - incurring five minutes worth of penalties for every stage missed - and were running down the order where their progress was hampered as they caught between two to four cars a stage. When they had a clean run, they were posting times inside the top 30 with their best display coming as they were 25th quickest on stage 16.
On Sunday, engine problems blighted the crew's performance with it overheating on the way to the finish in Trier and after making it, they had to go over the ramp by foot, ending an eventful three days for them.
"It's really disappointing that we had all the problems and had to SupeRally but it was all experience," said the 23-year-old. "We had no warning about the oil as it had just happened in front of us so there was nothing we could really do to avoid the situation.
"When we rejoined the rally it was frustrating that we kept on catching the cars ahead but it was good to get some practice in across some different stages and get a finish. We had some promising times when we had no problems."
Rallye Deutschland was a one-off outing for O'Mahony and Higgins and now they have set their sights back on their British Rally Championship campaign and round four, the Ulster International Rally, this weekend.
Last time out in the series on the Rally Isle of Man they finished an impressive seventh overall and first in class R3 after setting consistent stage times inside the top 10.
The pair have contested the Ulster International Rally once before in 2005 and it was a successful outing as they clinched the British Super 1600 Championship title.
