Former works driver and Welsh rallying legend Geoff Jones will return to the scene of his last triumph, the Plains Rally, next month at the wheel of John Lloyd's Ford Focus World Rally Car which is supported by Jardine Lloyd Thompson.
Jones, who drove for the works Nissan and Proton teams in the British Rally Championship in the 1990's, last contested the Plains Rally in 2005 driving Lloyd's Group A Subaru Impreza and rewarded the Jardine Lloyd Thompson Rally Team by taking an emphatic overall win.
Jones has been involved with the testing and development of this car, however this will be his competition debut in a World Rally Car on his home event.
“When John asked if I would like to use his car on the Plains Rally I could not believe the opportunity given to me,” he said. “The smile on my face showed my appreciation. Over the past two years I have enjoyed testing and developing the car for John and I greatly appreciate the opportunity he has provided.
“I have asked Rhydian Welson who co-drove for me during the 1990's to sit in the passenger seat. This is one of my favourite events using stages in Pantperthog and Dyfi. My family, friends and supporters will be out on the event, I will certainly have my eye on a podium position.”
John Lloyd is returning from a business trip to Australia on Saturday morning and will be leaving Heathrow in the direction of Ludlow Race Course for the start of the Woodpecker Rally.
Co-driven by Pauline Gullick he will be joined by team-mates Andrew Barnes and Guy Simmons who will also be driving a Jardine Lloyd Thompson supported Ford Focus WRC.
