Perez finishes `Death Race 2000 meets Mad Max`.

After over 2,700km in less than a week, Kick Energy rally driver Steve Perez's Peruvian adventure ended when he was classified as fourth overall following the final leg of the 2008 Incas Rally.

Following the final leg along the Pan American Highway, there was some confusion over an alleged time penalty but at the finish, it was all sorted out eventually after another day of excitement in his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9.

After some high speed stages, which saw Perez and co driver Michael Baca average around 125mph, the former double British champion was fastest on the final stage after a problem on the penultimate test.

There, he suffered a puncture on the 550km stage and as well as stopping to change that, he had to refuel twice but still completed it in less than three and a half hours.

"The organisers were shouting something over the radio but I hadn't a clue what they were saying! In the end, it turns out that I should have pulled over to let someone past and they slapped a huge time penalty on us but we have since had it rescinded. That means we were classified sixth, then fifth and eventually they decided we were fourth!" said the exhausted Chesterfield businessman at the Nazca stage finish, prior to the ceremonial finish in Lima.

"This has to be the craziest thing I've done in my life, especially the last stage where they set the slowest cars off first, in pairs, at thirty second intervals. It was foot against the stop for most of the stage, travelling at speeds of around 140mph. It was Death Race 2000 meets Mad Max and I was told over a million people had lined the route.

"It's the biggest thing to happen in Peru and everywhere we went, we were accosted by people wanting photos and autographs, it was unreal, and after a sketchy start, my co-driver eventually learned the difference between left and right and I must say thanks to him for his experience as there's no way anyone can come over here and do that job.

"All in all it's been the thrill and adventure of a lifetime and I have enjoyed every single minute of it. It's mad, crazy, extreme, unconventional, and whatever other adjectives you want to describe it, and to come away with fourth, after the few problems we've had, is fantastic.

"Thanks to my team, who have worked round the clock to keep us going, it's going to be a strange experience in the Yorkshire forests on the Trackrod Rally now this coming weekend - that is for sure!"
