Darren Gass, the 2007 Pirelli Star Driver award winner, will look to end his season on a high next weekend when he lines up in the field for the final round of the World Rally Championship, Wales Rally GB.
The rally is the last in the six-event prize at the wheel of the Pirelli liveried Mitsubishi, estimated to be worth in the region of £250,000, that Gass secured last year following a head-to-head shootout.
Officially classed as a privateer entrant on each of the other rallies he has contested during the course of the year, Gass has secured a place within the Production World Rally Championship nominations under the Orion World Rally Team banner for Wales Rally GB and will run two just places behind current British Rally Championship leader David Higgins on the road.
As a result, he will be hopeful of improved pace compared to if he was running further down the order as a privateer.
“Before this year I had limited experience of four wheel drive,” he said, “so this season has been an excellent opportunity for me to learn and show what I'm capable of, as Neil and I got to grips with the Mitsubishi.
“I'm really looking forward to Rally GB. It's a tough event, but I think we have a very good chance of mixing it at the front of the BRC runners. Hopefully that will put us in amongst the PWRC regulars too.”
As for next season, Gass said he was hopeful of returning to the domestic series for another year.
“We would love to be back in the British Rally Championship next year,” he said, “but we'll have to wait and see.”
